Congress senior leader and former minister M Mukesh Goud passed away here on Monday.

Hyderabad: Congress senior leader and former minister M Mukesh Goud passed away here on Monday.

He was 60 years. He was unwell for the last few years and was recently admitted to Apollo hospital after he was diagnosed to be suffering from cancer. He is survived by his wife, two sons and a daughter.

His funeral will be held at Mahaprasthanam on Tuesday. Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao expressed his grief over the death of Mukesh and directed the officials to see that the last rites were performed with state honours.

Born on July 1, 1959, Mukesh Goud did his graduation in Bachelor of Arts from Osmania University. He began his political career in 1980s and was elected as general secretary of Andhra Pradesh Youth Congress in 1983.

In 1986, he was elected as the corporator from Jambagh. He was later elected as member of Andhra Pradesh Legislative Assembly in 1989 from Maharajgunj constituency.

He had also served as Chairman of AP Urban Housing Development Corporation from 1991-1994.

He was re-elected as MLA in 2004 from the Maharajgunj constituency and was also inducted as minister in the cabinet of Dr YS Rajashekhara Reddy.

He was elected as MLA for the third term from Goshamahal constituency and continued as minister in Rajashekhar Reddy, K Rosaiah and Kiran Kumar Reddy's cabinets.

However, he lost elections held in 1999, 2014 and 2018. Senior Congress leaders Gulam Nabi Azad, Mallikarjun Kharge, TPCC president N Uttam Kumar Reddy and other senior leaders rushed to the Congress leader's residence and paid tributes.
