Tomato prices see an increase in Hyderabad markets due to the shortage of supply

Adding up to the COVID-19 crisis, the retail price of tomatoes shot up to Rs 60 per kg in Hyderabad markets making it difficult for the normal people to buy the vegetable.

Though the tomato prices were stable during the lockdown period and in summer, the price has been increased steadily for the last 10 days. The price of the tomato had fluctuated between Rs 20 and Rs 20 during the lockdown and now the price has been tripled.

In the wholesale market, the tomatoes are being sold at Rs 40 while in the retail market, they are being sold at Rs 60. The rise in tomato price is due to the decrease in the supply. Tomatoes are being supplied to Hyderabad from city outskirts and for the last two weeks, the markets have seen a decrease in the tomato supply. Also, the crops have not been harvested in several areas in the city outskirts.

It is expected that the prices will see a dip in a month with the tomatoes reaching the market.

With the decrease in the tomato supply, the wholesale traders are importing it from neighbouring states like Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka. Transport charges, the commission of the agents also led to the tomato price soaring.
