Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu has said protecting people’s lives is more important than electoral concerns, as the state responds to the recent cyclones. He said that easing people’s suffering would naturally lead to favourable electoral outcomes.

Speaking during a review of the situation, Naidu said the government’s priorities were good governance and the effective delivery of development and welfare programmes. He announced that he would visit cyclone-affected areas on Wednesday to assess conditions in person.

On the Budameru stream, he said there was no danger and urged the public not to believe rumours or cause unnecessary alarm.

Naidu said the state was dealing with the combined effects of cyclones and El Niño, a combination of challenges he described as potentially unprecedented. He said precautions were being taken to prevent epidemics after the storms and advised residents to remain vigilant.

The state is still facing a 27 per cent rainfall deficit, he added, while the government focuses on rescue, relief and rehabilitation. The cyclones disrupted electricity supply in 4,095 villages and halted operations at 548 substations.
