Vijayawada: Stating that the State government would promote sports in the State, Minister for Tourism, Sports and Culture Avanti Srinivas has said the government would release sports calendar very soon and conduct events in all districts of the State to unearth the talent of the youth.

He pointed out that the State government had allocated Rs 140 crore to the Sports Authority of Andhra Pradesh (SAAP) this financial year. Srinivas distributed prizes to the winners of the AP State junior inter-district athletics championship which concluded at the Acharya Nagarjuna University on Sunday.

About 1,200 athletes in the age group of 14, 16, 18 and 20 from all the 13 districts participated in the State-level event. Speaking on the occasion, the Minister said the State government had begun the talent hunt and would encourage sports.

He said Chief Minister Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy is a good sportsman and cricketer and he was the team captain when he studied in Hyderabad Public School. He suggested to the students to have a vision and work hard to achieve the goals.

He has made it clear the selection process in the sports and games will be very fair and there will be no discrimination of caste, creed, community and region. Physical Director of ANU Paul Kumar, AP Olympic Association representative Adireddy Satyanarayana and others were present on the occasion.

Visakhapatnam district won the overall championship. Krishna district girls stood first and Srikakulam boys secured the top place among the boys. Minister Srinivas distributed the medals and prizes to the winners.
