Balu Swarasaptakam: Penning a tribute to SPB based on seven musical notes
Raghavan Komanduru, an aspiring writer, singer and anchor grew up like millions around the world with an immense love for songs of the legendary singer S P Balasubrahmanyam. Though Tamil is his mother tongue, his deep admiration for Telugu literature inspired him to express his affection and emotional bond with Balu Garu through his writing in the language known as ‘Latin of the East’.
From the many songs he wrote, he selected seven and conceptualised them as a tribute representing the seven musical notes — Sa, Ri, Ga, Ma, Pa, Dha and Ni. Thus was born “Balu Swarasaptakam – A Musical Tribute to the Gandharva of Music”, launched recently at Vibe N Voice Studio, Hyderabad, followed by a presentation of the newly created songs. Each song in the book represents a distinct emotion and a unique perspective of the writer towards Balu Garu. With the assistance of modern AI technology, Raghavan created music for all seven songs.
With an audio message sent by S P Sailaja, the singer-sister of Balu complimenting the author’s endeavour, the book was unveiled by Tata Hanumantha Rao, a known SPB music circle associate in Chennai and Hyderabad and Nandi awardee Bayya Vinod Babu, who had the privilege of being closely associated with the iconic playback singer during his musical journey.
Following the book launch, the seven songs from the Swarasaptakam were presented. The first five songs were performed by the writer and singer himself, along with singers Rajagopal and Jagadeesh. The final two songs were performed by renowned singer and recipient of the title “Bala Hanu,” Hanumantha Rao, and singer- music director Bayya Vinod Babu making the event all the more memorable.
Other distinguished guests who were present from the city music circuit were Komaravolu Srinivasa Rao, Sridharam Rama Subrahmanyam, Trinath Rao, and senior journalist Naresh Kumar who praised the initiative. The songs are available on Raghavan’s YouTube channel, Pratibhaku Prashamsa, enabling music lovers to experience this unique tribute.
Following the book launch and the presentation of the songs from the book, a special musical programme featuring several talented singers from the twin cities, celebrating the timeless music of Balu Garu, captivated the audience, both those present at the venue and the fans who watched the proceedings remotely.
