UoH Foundation Day lecture focuses on nation-building
Padma Bhushan awardee Dr. K. I. Varaprasad Reddy, founder of Shantha Biotechnics, delivered a distinguished lecture at the Foundation Day celebration of the School of Management Studies at the University of Hyderabad (UoH) on Monday. His address focused on purpose-driven leadership, social responsibility and the role of innovation in addressing public needs.
Drawing on his entrepreneurial journey, Dr. Varaprasad Reddy spoke about the importance of pursuing initiatives with a clear purpose and a commitment to serving society. He said that meaningful goals, supported by determination and a willingness to overcome challenges, could help turn difficult ideas into practical outcomes.
He cited the establishment of Shantha Biotechnics in 1993 as an example of this approach. At the time, access to affordable vaccines was a significant public health concern in India. The company worked towards developing biotechnology products that could make essential healthcare more accessible.
One of its key developments was Shanvac-B, described as India’s first indigenously developed recombinant hepatitis B vaccine. Its introduction contributed to efforts to improve the availability and affordability of hepatitis B vaccination. In recognition of his contribution to biotechnology and healthcare, Dr. Varaprasad Reddy received the Padma Bhushan in 2005.
During the lecture, he also highlighted the role of universities in developing skilled human resources and supporting innovation. He emphasised the need for educational institutions to strengthen infrastructure, nurture talent and create opportunities for students to contribute to society. He encouraged young people to participate actively in nation-building and contribute to India’s development goals, including the vision of Viksit Bharat.
Dr. Varaprasad Reddy’s address also underlined the broader responsibilities of leadership, noting that professional achievements can have a wider impact when linked to public welfare and social progress. His entrepreneurial experience provided students and faculty with perspectives on the relationship between innovation, perseverance and social purpose.
Prof. J. Anuradha, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Hyderabad, presided over the lecture. Prof. G. V. K. Acharyulu, Dean of the School of Management Studies, outlined the school’s activities and achievements, while Prof. Lokanandha Irala Reddy introduced the speaker.
The event was attended by students, faculty members and guests from Hyderabad. The lecture formed part of the school’s Foundation Day programme, bringing attention to the role of leadership, entrepreneurship and education in addressing societal challenges.
