International Yoga Day 2020: Theme
The outbreak of Covid-19 has made us realise the importance of immunity and healthy living. Yoga brings these qualities together. Due to the pandemic most of the countries are following social distancing, this year the theme is set by United Nations as "Yoga for Health – Yoga at Home". The World Health Organization refer yoga as a means to improve health in its Global Action Plan on Physical Activity 2018–2030: More active people for a healthier world.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi introduced the proposal first in his address during the opening of the 69th session of the General Assembly; he said: "Yoga is an invaluable gift from our ancient tradition. Yoga embodies unity of mind and body, thought and action, a holistic approach that is valuable to our health and our well-being. Yoga is not just about exercise; it is a way to discover the sense of oneness with yourself, the world and nature."
Prime Minister Narendra Modi proposed the International Day of Yoga in his 2014 address at the United Nations General Assembly. He suggested that a day celebrating and practising Yoga must be recognised globally.
At Rajpath in New Delhi the first Yoga Day celebration was held, where PM Modi and other dignitaries performed 21 yoga asanas and created two Guinness World Records. The first record was the participation of 35,985 people, the world's largest yoga class. The second record had 84 participating nationalities. In 2019, Modi had performed Yoga with over 50,000 enthusiasts in Dehradun.
