Bengaluru Gets First Circular Textile Lab at Koramangala Waste Management Centre

Bengaluru: A new Solid Waste Learning Centre and Bengaluru’s first Circular Textile Lab were inaugurated at the Integrated Solid Waste Management Centre, popularly known as the Kasa Rasa Kendra, in Koramangala.

The facilities are aimed at strengthening waste segregation, recycling, resource recovery and public awareness while promoting a circular economy model for the city.The Circular Textile Lab will collect textile waste from garment units and tailoring establishments and process it for reuse and value addition. Waste fabric and cloth scraps will be converted into products such as bags, wallets and bedsheets, creating employment opportunities for local residents.

The Solid Waste Learning Centre will provide practical training on waste management to students, apartment residents, employees of commercial establishments and pourakarmikas. Several educational institutions, including RV Educational Institutions, have partnered with the initiative.

A bio-methanisation unit with a capacity to process 13 tonnes of wet waste per day has also been established at the centre. The biogas generated from the facility will be supplied as fuel to nearby hotels.

To facilitate the movement and handling of waste, a 25-tonne-capacity mini transfer station has also been set up.

The centre will undertake several other recycling initiatives. Thermocol waste will be processed into solid material and sent to Delhi for conversion into products such as photo frames and other articles. Fibre will also be recovered from discarded mattresses and put to reuse.

A doorstep collection system for bulk waste has also been launched in the BTM Layout Assembly constituency. Under the initiative, residents can have bulky discarded items such as old sofas, cots and tables collected directly from their homes.

The initiatives are intended to reduce the quantity of waste reaching landfills and promote greater reuse and recycling of materials.

The event was attended by Chamundeshwari, Bengaluru South City Corporation Commissioner K N Ramesh, BSWML CEO Karigowda, Shashikala, former corporators Chandrappa, Govardhan Reddy and Padmashree Balaram, along with local leaders, senior officials and residents.
