Karnataka AI University sets education roadmap

Bengaluru: The first meeting of the Karnataka Artificial Intelligence University (KAIU) advisory committee was held in Bengaluru on Saturday to discuss the roadmap for establishing the proposed university and launching immediate AI education and skill-development programmes across the state.

The committee, chaired by Infosys co-founder and Axilor Ventures chairman Kris Gopalakrishnan and co-chaired by IT-BT and Science and Technology Department secretary Dr N Manjula, discussed a phased approach to establishing the university.

A key focus was on launching certificate, diploma, finishing school, executive education and reskilling programmes even before the full-fledged university becomes operational. The programmes will cover generative and agentic AI, data analytics, cloud technologies, cybersecurity, AI infrastructure, data centres, physical AI, semiconductors, hardware applications and AI literacy.

The committee also discussed reaching university students, graduates, technology professionals, professionals from other sectors and rural youth. Industry participation will be encouraged through faculty support, mentoring, certification and practical projects. Existing educational infrastructure and AI learning laboratories across Karnataka will be utilised to expand training beyond Bengaluru. The committee also explored international academic partnerships, joint programmes, industry-led research and pathways to advanced courses and PhD programmes.

Gopalakrishnan said the first meeting was focused on converting the vision into action by bringing together existing industry expertise, training programmes and academic infrastructure. Dr Manjula said creating an institutional framework would be a priority, while legislative and institutional processes for establishing the university would proceed simultaneously with immediate skill-development initiatives.
