Karnataka FDA cancels 16 pharmacy licences
Bengaluru: The Karnataka Food Safety and Drugs Administration (FDA) has cancelled the licences of 16 pharmacies and suspended eight others following a probe into an alleged spurious drug network operating from a farmhouse near Bidadi.
The action followed a raid by the FDA Drug Enforcement Wing on August 18 at a farmhouse in Kurubarakeranahalli. Officials reportedly seized suspected spurious medicines, packaging material and machinery allegedly used for repacking and relabelling drugs. The seized material was estimated at around Rs 5.05 crore.
According to preliminary findings, low-cost medicines procured from other states were allegedly repacked into fresh vials and marketed as expensive life-saving medicines manufactured by reputed multinational pharmaceutical companies. Some of the suspected products reportedly carried forged Pfizer labels. Officials also found that QR and scanning codes printed on the labels did not function, raising questions about the authenticity and traceability of the medicines.
Following the investigation, regulatory proceedings were initiated against 24 pharmacy licences. While 16 licences have now been cancelled, eight have been suspended. The establishments facing action include Avesco Healthcare, Bangalore Speciality Pharma, Bengalurus Speciality Pharma, Patel Medi Trade, Rajarajeshwari Pharma, N.S. Pharma, Surya Specialty Pharma, SWS Pharma, Krupa Healthcare and St. Philomena Hospital Drug Centre. Sagar Pharma, Zymus Pharma and Fortune Medical Solutions are also among those named.
The FDA is examining purchase bills, invoices, stock registers and distribution records to trace the movement of the suspected medicines and determine whether they reached hospitals, pharmacies or patients.
Officials are also investigating establishments that may have sourced medicines from the suspected network. Further regulatory or legal action is likely if violations are established or links to the alleged manufacture, repacking or distribution of spurious drugs are confirmed.
