On the occasion of Teachers' Day, Karnataka Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar announced that teachers in the state may use the prefix ‘Tr’ before their names. He stated that this prefix serves as a mark of respect, acknowledging the services rendered by the teaching community. "A society that respects its teachers respects its own future," he remarked. This prefix places them on par with professional titles held by doctors, engineers, and professors. Chief Minister Shivakumar shared this announcement via his ‘X’ handle. He noted that although it consists of only two letters, it signifies a lifetime of service. He emphasised that ‘Tr’ is not merely a title but an identity for teachers who shape lives. A teacher molds the individual who, in turn, goes on to build the nation. There are over ten million teachers in India—including approximately 4.5 lakh in Karnataka—who shape the intellect, character, and future of our children every day, he stated in the tweet.
The Chief Minister observed that every doctor, engineer, farmer, official, businessperson, and leader had a teacher who first recognized their potential and showed them what was possible. "On this Teachers' Day, the Government of Karnataka has decided to honor this invaluable service with a special form of recognition." He stated that, starting today, teachers in Karnataka can proudly use the prefix ‘Tr.’ before their names. Expressing respect and admiration for teachers, the Chief Minister wrote, "Karnataka salutes every teacher who guided us, corrected us, encouraged our dreams, and believed in us. Thank you for shaping our children. Thank you for building Karnataka. Thank you for building India." He remarked that ‘Tr.’ is an honor truly earned by teachers.
