Karnataka teachers can now use ‘Tr’ prefix before their names
In Short
Karnataka government has allowed teachers to use the prefix “Tr” before their names, recognising their contribution to education, character-building, constitutional values, social harmony and nation-building.

Bengaluru: Teachers across Karnataka can now use the prefix “Tr” (Teacher) before their names, with the state government issuing an order allowing the title as a mark of recognition for their contribution to society and education.
The decision was announced as part of Teachers’ Day celebrations, acknowledging the role of teachers in shaping students’ academic growth, character, confidence and future careers. The government said teachers play a crucial role in building a progressive and responsible society.
According to the order, teachers do more than impart academic knowledge. They help students develop discipline, honesty, scientific thinking, constitutional values and respect for others. They also encourage children to question without fear, overcome failures and develop confidence to face challenges.
The government noted that teachers identify students’ hidden talents and guide them in choosing appropriate careers. By promoting creativity and scientific temper, teachers also contribute to the social and economic progress of the country.
The order highlighted the broader contribution of teachers in nation-building. Doctors, engineers, scientists, professionals, administrators, entrepreneurs and leaders who contribute to society have, at some stage, been guided and shaped by teachers.
Teachers also play an important role in promoting social harmony by providing education without discrimination based on caste or religion and helping future generations understand the country’s culture and heritage, the government said.
The government said Karnataka has around 4.5 lakh teachers, while more than one crore teachers across India are engaged in shaping the minds and futures of children.
Describing *“Tr”* as more than merely a title, the government said the prefix would represent the lifelong service and commitment of teachers who dedicate themselves to shaping the lives of others.
The order allows teachers to proudly use “Tr” before their names as a distinctive symbol of social recognition and appreciation for their contribution to education and nation-building.
