Ravi calls for impartial probe, compensation for victims
Chikkamagaluru: Karnataka Legislative Council member Ravi C T has called for an impartial investigation into the accident in Gwalior, Madhya Pradesh, and the stampede during Durga Puja celebrations in Kolkata, West Bengal, demanding that the respective state governments bear the medical expenses of the injured and provide adequate compensation to the families of those killed.
Speaking to the media in Chikkamagaluru on Sunday, Ravi stressed the need to prioritise public safety at venues that attract large crowds. He urged the chief ministers of Madhya Pradesh and West Bengal to take necessary measures to prevent such tragedies from recurring. He also expressed condolences to the bereaved families and prayed for strength for them to overcome their loss.
Turning to the political situation in the country, Ravi said elected governments could be changed only by winning the people’s confidence through democratic means. Street clashes and confrontations, he maintained, could not be used to bring down a democratically elected government.
He alleged that the Congress had lost public confidence during its tenure because of corruption and activities that, according to him, divided society.
Referring to a reported statement by KPCC president B K Hariprasad offering financial assistance to anyone opposing Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Ravi criticised the remarks, describing such an approach as contrary to national interests and democratic principles.
