Chennai : Religious fervour marked the Sri Krishna Janmashtami celebrations at the ISKCON temple here on Friday. The two-day celebrations at the ISKCON Chennai ECR temple began on September 3, with devotees, families, youth, residents and members of the public participating in large numbers, ISKCON said.
The celebrations opened with Sandhya Arati (evening worship ceremony), followed by the Adivas ceremony (ritual marking the beginning of the celebrations). On September 4, the programme commenced with Mangala Arati (morning worship ceremony), followed by a Srimad Bhagavatam class, Darshan Arati and Guru Puja. Devotees observed the Janmashtami fast throughout the day and thronged the temple to seek darshan (sacred viewing of the deity) of Lord Sri Krishna.
Abhishekam Seva (ceremonial bathing of the deity) and Kirtan Mela (devotional singing session) were held from 10 am, with devotees joining in congregational chanting of the holy names.
The Maha Abhishekam (grand ceremonial bathing of the deity) was performed amid kirtan, followed by the Maha Arati, marking the appearance of Lord Sri Krishna. Prasadam was distributed to devotees on the occasion. The celebrations were streamed live on the official ISKCON Chennai YouTube channel for devotees unable to visit the temple.
“Sri Krishna Janmashtami commemorates the divine appearance of Lord Sri Krishna. The observance allows devotees to hear and chant the holy names, seek darshan and participate in Arati, kirtan and abhishekam in remembrance of the Lord’s appearance,” the release said.
