Mangalagiri: DGP Harish Kumar Gupta on Wednesday flagged off 26 Mobile Forensic Vehicles (MFVs) for all districts at the 6th APSP Battalion Grounds here, marking a major step towards strengthening scientific investigation and forensic evidence collection at crime scenes across the state.
The vehicles are intended to improve the availability of forensic assistance at the district level, reduce response time and enable investigating officers to collect scientific evidence during the initial stages of investigations. The DGP said modern policing was increasingly dependent on scientific and technology-based investigation and stressed the importance of timely forensic support and reliable evidence collection. The initiative has been structured as a three-tier, 24x7 forensic evidence collection system in line with Section 176(3) of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), particularly for offences punishable with seven years or more of imprisonment. Under Tier-1, 107 existing crime-scene vehicles at the SDPO level will provide immediate forensic assistance in offences punishable with less than seven years. Tier-2 comprises the 26 newly launched district mobile forensic vehicles for cases involving seven years or more.
Under Tier-3, specialist teams from the Andhra Pradesh Forensic Science Laboratory (APFSL) headquarters and seven Regional Forensic Science Laboratories (RFSLs) will handle sensitive, complex and high-profile cases requiring advanced expertise. The MFVs are equipped with advanced crime-scene processing and forensic kits, including bloodstain detection, gunshot residue (GSR), NDPS, fire investigation and fingerprint development kits, advanced forensic light sources and cyber-forensic equipment. They will facilitate scientific crime-scene examination, documentation, photography, identification and collection of physical evidence, preservation, packing and labelling, thereby strengthening the chain of custody.
The APFSL has also expanded its infrastructure, with new DNA and cyber-forensic laboratories established at RFSL Tirupati and RFSL Visakhapatnam. RFSL Rajamahendravaram was inaugurated on September 12.
In 2025, APFSL received 25,602 cases and examined 23,682, achieving a 92.5 per cent disposal rate, with 1,920 cases pending. The State ranked second nationally, behind Karnataka’s 92.7 per cent disposal rate. DGP Gupta said the strengthened forensic network would improve coordination between investigating officers and forensic personnel and contribute to better-quality investigations and criminal justice delivery.
