Guntur: District Vigilance Committee member Dr Chadalawada Haribabu warned that strict action, including sealing of shops, would be taken against traders selling rice at prices higher than those fixed by the government.

In a statement, he said that several popular varieties of rice, including Sona Masuri, HMT, Swarna Masuri and Jai Sriram, were being sold in the open market at prices ranging from Rs 2,000 to Rs 2,250 or more per bag. He said that the high prices were imposing a financial burden on consumers.

He stated that the government had prescribed the following retail prices for different varieties of rice: Sona Samba Rs 66-a-kg, HMT RNR Rs 76 per kg, Swarna Masuri Rs 47 per kg, Jai Sriram variety Rs 82-a-kg. Dr Haribabu directed rice traders to prominently display the government-fixed prices on notice boards in their shops. He appealed to consumers to report shops selling rice above the prescribed rates or supplying underweight bags by calling the toll-free complaint cell No 8800001915.
