6 students drown during Ganesh idol immersion
Hyderabad: Ganesh idol immersion turned out to be a tragedy after six students of a trust-maintained orphanage home drowned in Nereducharla lake of Kanjerla village in Patancheru police limits on Wednesday.
Following the pathetic incident of six students’ deaths during immersion of Ganesh idol, gloomy situation prevailed at the village.
According to Patancheru police, the identified six students - Narasimha Raju, 18, Sumanth, 19, Ganesh, 20, Uday Kumar, 21, Sham Kumar, 18, diploma students and class X student Siddharth.
Around 3 pm, the Ganesh pandal organisers started a procession of an idol amidst jarring music, playing drums. These students also joined the immersion procession.
When the organisers and villagers were busy with Ganesh idol immersion, these students were swimming in the Nereducharla lake. "One of these students drowned in the lake as he went to deep water. In an attempt to rescue him, other students were drowned. Upon noticing the incident, villagers informed us. With the assistance of villagers, we fished out six bodies from the lake and shifted to government hospital for postmortem," police said.
The students were taking shelter at Sirisha Charitable trust. Police registered a suspicious death case in connection with the incident.
