Flyovers not lasting solution to traffic woes, concur experts
Hyderabad: The Telangana government’s decision to sanction two packages of flyovers spanning 4.3 km between the Jubilee Hills check-post and the NFCL junction has raised concerns over the long-term effectiveness of the project.
Experts have questioned the need for the proposed infrastructure, arguing that flyovers offer temporary relief from traffic congestion and are unlikely to provide a sustainable solution for even the next two decades.
As per the experts, the construction of flyovers will not address the primary causes of Hyderabad’s growing traffic congestion. Instead, such projects often shift congestion from one point to another, creating bottlenecks at entry and exit points. “This is not a solution to traffic congestion”, is what the experts say.
Dr Donthi Narsimha Reddy, a public policy expert, told The Hans India that the proposed six-lane elevated corridor from the Jubilee Hills check--post to the NFCL junction, taken up at a cost of Rs 1,090 crore, should not be treated as a long-term solution and that the project’s necessity should be reconsidered in the light of comprehensive traffic studies and sustainable alternatives. He said: “The infrastructure is unlikely to provide effective relief over even the next two decades.” Narsimha Reddy points out that Hyderabad has witnessed repeated road-widening exercises over the past 30 years.
