Amaravati: In a significant step towards the long-awaited urban local body elections in the state, the Andhra Pradesh government has notified reservations for mayoral posts in all 17 municipal corporations in the State, allocating five posts to Backward Classes, five to women under the general category, two to Scheduled Castes and one to Scheduled Tribes, while keeping four unreserved.

The Municipal Administration and Urban Development Department issued GO Ms No 252 on Monday, approving the reservations under the Andhra Pradesh Municipal Corporations Act, 1994, and the rules governing reservation of Mayor posts.

The notification follows the recommendations of the Dedicated Commission and the directions of the Supreme Court. Under the roster, Mangalagiri-Tadepalli has been reserved for the Scheduled Tribes (general), while Kurnool has been allotted to the Scheduled Castes (women) and Rajamahendravaram to the Scheduled Castes (general). Five corporations have been reserved for BCs: Kakinada and Machilipatnam for BC women, and Eluru, Anantapuram and Chittoor for BCs (general).

The mayor posts in Vizianagaram, Srikakulam, Guntur, Kadapa and the Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation (GVMC) have been reserved for women under the general category. Vijayawada, Tirupati, Ongole, and Nellore have been kept unreserved.

The government said the reservations were finalised in accordance with Section 14-A of the Andhra Pradesh Municipal Corporations Act and the relevant reservation rules. The notification was ordered to be published in an extraordinary issue of the Andhra Pradesh Gazette on October 12.

The roster determines the category eligibility for the mayor’s post in each corporation in the forthcoming ordinary elections.
