Hyderabad: In a medical milestone, a six-week-old infant weighing 2.9 kilograms underwent a successful living-donor liver transplant at Rainbow Children Hospital, Banjara Hills. Suffering from rapidly progressive liver failure caused by Gestational Alloimmune Liver Disease, the baby received a 62-gram liver graft donated by his mother after medical therapies failed.

Pediatric Gastroenterologist Prashant Bachina and Transplant Surgeon Srinivas Reddy Mettu emphasized that early diagnosis and surgical precision were crucial given the infant tiny blood vessels and abdominal space.

Following surgery, the baby overcame severe lung complications, antibiotic-resistant infections, and a bowel leak requiring secondary surgery. Managed with intensive multidisciplinary care and nutritional support, the infant achieved full oral feeding and normal liver function. The hospital pediatric liver transplant programme has completed 107 operations across Hyderabad, Chennai, and Bengaluru with a 95 per cent survival rate. Parent company Rainbow Children Medicare Limited operates 26 hospitals across 11 cities.
