Hyderabad: Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWSSB) Managing Director Ashok Reddy has directed officials to take steps to significantly expand the use of treated wastewater from Sewage Treatment Plants (STPs) for non-potable purposes. On Monday, he visited the Durgam Cheruvu STP and inspected the treatment process, water quality and operations at the Green Water Tanker Filling Station.
He also reviewed tanker filling, supply and maintenance activities and instructed officials to increase the number of Green Water tanker trips to promote wider utilisation of treated water.Following the inspection, the MD held a special meeting with HMWSSB officials and representatives of Mindspace and Raheja Group. He urged the companies to replace freshwater with treated water for non-potable requirements, including construction activities, gardening and landscaping.
He directed officials to make necessary arrangements for supplying Green Water to these organisations. He also instructed them to ensure the use of treated water for gardening at the HMWSSB Jal Samrakshana Theme Park on Jubilee Hills Road No. 51.The MD directed officials to continuously monitor the quality of treated water at HMWSSB’s STPs. He enquired whether the treatment process was complying with the applicable standards prescribed by the National Green Tribunal (NGT).
He instructed officials to install LED display boards at every STP, showing real-time values of key water quality parameters such as Biological Oxygen Demand (BOD), Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD), Total Suspended Solids (TSS) and pH, along with their prescribed permissible limits. He said displaying these details would help build confidence among consumers regarding the quality of treated water.
Ashok Reddy stated that a dedicated mobile application was being used to manage Green Water tanker bookings, allocation, filling and delivery. He instructed the concerned directors, managers, operators, filling station in-charges and tanker drivers to mandatorily use the application. Every stage of the process, from booking to final delivery, must be updated on the app in real time.
