Hyderabad: In setback to the state, the Krishna River Management Board (KRMB) has asked the Telangana government to stop hydel power generation at Nagarjuna Sagar reservoir immediately and objected to the state using water for power generation at Srisailam power generation centre.

In the three-member meeting, the KRMB directed Telangana to adhere to paragraphs 2 and 3 of the 11th Schedule of the AP Reorganisation Act, 2014 while utilising water from the Krishna river.

Citing the limited available water resources ,the Board observed that priority should be given to meet drinking water needs and asked the state to immediately halt the use of water for power generation.

The Board asserted that both Telangana and Andhra Pradesh must utilise water solely for drinking water requirements. The Board meeting on Friday witnessed heated arguments on the utilisation of available water in the Krishna river reservoirs.

The Board concluded the meeting without any decision on the allocation of water between the two states, though representatives of both sides have alleged illegal withdrawal of water in recent times.

The Board called for another meeting at the end of September.
