Hyderabad: Telangana BJP chief N Ramachander Rao on Friday slammed Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy for praising Owaisi brothers as patriots, calling it an insult to the entire country and alleging vote-bank and appeasement politics.
Rao questioned the basis on which Revanth was issuing “patriotic certificates” to the Owaisi brothers. He referred to a controversial statement by one of the brothers about what he could do if police were removed for 15 minutes and asked the Chief Minister and Congress MP Rahul Gandhi to explain their definition and limits of patriotism.
Rao said patriotism meant respecting the national flag and national anthem. He pointed out that when ‘Vande Mataram’ was sung in the State Assembly, no Majlis MLA, including Owaisi, stood up. Calling such people patriots was “ridiculous”, he said.
Rao said he was happy that Revanth had acknowledged Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah as patriots, but giving Owaisi a similar certificate was a grave insult to the people of the country. He challenged Congress to prove its patriotism by singing ‘Vande Mataram’ in full in the Assemblies.
BJP chief spokesperson and media in-charge NV Subhash also criticised the comparison, saying patriotism could not be reduced to political convenience. Referring to Owaisi’s June 2024 Lok Sabha oath controversy, he said expressions such as “Jai Palestine” must be viewed in the context of parliamentary responsibilities. Subhash also cited the AIMIM’s historical legacy, recalling the erstwhile MIM’s association with Kasim Razvi and the Razakar movement before Hyderabad’s integration into the Indian Union.
