Khammam: Agriculture Minister Tummala Nageswara Rao directed officials to expedite development works in Khammam constituency and complete them within the stipulated timelines. The Minister, along with District Collector Divakara TS and Commissioner of Police Sunil Dutt, reviewed the progress of development works being taken up by various departments on Tuesday. Tummala directed officials to ensure that all tanks under the Manchukonda Lift Irrigation Scheme are filled and asked them to commence the long-pending Bugga Vagu lift irrigation works immediately. He also instructed officials to examine the possibility of supplying Bugga Vagu water to canals through gravity flow and submit revised estimates.

The Minister stressed the need to accord priority to irrigation and drinking water and directed officials to plan the utilisation of Godavari water carefully. He also asked them to pay special attention to canals, shutters and water levels and complete maintenance works during the summer from the next season.
He directed officials to expedite the cable bridge works and ensure that it is ready for handover in November. Works on the medical college hostel and administrative building were also to be expedited so that they could be inaugurated along with the cable bridge.
Tummala instructed departments to complete tendering and other formalities for all sanctioned works by the end of September and make full use of the October-June working season.
On agriculture, the Minister asked officials to prepare an alternative crop action plan for the coming rabi season by the end of September, considering water availability, groundwater levels and power supply. He called for reducing paddy cultivation where necessary and promoting alternative crops. He also asked officials to expand oil-palm cultivation. He set November 21 as the deadline for completing houses and basic infrastructure in Velugumatla Colony. Roads, drainage, electricity lines and an Anganwadi centre should be completed to develop the colony as a model settlement. He also suggested linking houses with rooftop solar facilities under the PM Surya Ghar scheme.
The Minister called for a 10-year electricity plan for Khammam city, including requirements for new substations and underground cabling in important areas. He also asked officials to examine phased rooftop solar installations for Gruha Jyothi beneficiaries.
