Kurnool: Intensifying proactive measures to curb vector-borne diseases, district health authorities have deployed Gambusia fish into stagnant water bodies across several villages in Kurnool district to naturally check mosquito proliferation.

Under the direct supervision of District Malaria Officer T Venkateswarlu, comprehensive anti-larval operations were executed across rural sub-units, including Kodumuru, Pattikonda, Devanakonda, and Kurnool Rural.

Health teams inspected open wells, water pits, village ponds, and accumulated rainwater sources, releasing Gambusia fish—which actively feed on mosquito larvae—into viable aquatic environments as an effective biological control mechanism. Officials emphasized that this eco-friendly intervention significantly reduces larval density, preventing the spread of seasonal illnesses such as malaria, dengue, and chikungunya.

Complementing the biological drive, health personnel observed the “Friday–Dry Day” initiative by visiting residential clusters to sensitize locals on maintaining hygienic surroundings. Residents were urged to regularly clear discarded tires, containers, and domestic water storage vessels to prevent mosquito breeding.

Furthermore, District Malaria Officer Venkateswarlu introduced field staff and villagers to the Vector Control App, a digital tool designed to streamline monitoring and improve surveillance efficiency.

Assistant Malaria Officer S Vijay Kumar, sub-unit officers Rangaswamy, Venkateswarlu, Krishnudu, and Nazeer Ahmed, alongside field supervisors, ANMs, Mid-Level Health Providers (MLHPs), ASHA workers, and local village representatives, actively participated in the extensive public health campaign across the district.
