Nellore: Campaigning for the Nellore Municipal Corporation (NMC) elections has reached a fever pitch following the conclusion of the nomination filing process on Sunday.
Political heavyweights, including the TDP-led NDA alliance, YSRCP, Congress, and Left parties, have intensified grassroots canvassing across all municipal divisions.
NMC Commissioner and Additional Election Authority Y.O. Nandan confirmed that 35 nominations were received for the Mayor post and 663 for Corporator positions.
In the Mayoral race, filings included TDP (5), YSRCP (5), Congress (5), BJP (2), JSP (1), BSP (1), other parties (3), and 13 Independents. For division corporator seats, YSRCP submitted 233 nominations, while TDP filed 209, followed by Independents (69), Jana Sena (56), BJP (28), Congress (28), CPI (13), CPM (8), and BSP (1).
The TDP-led NDA coalition is seeking votes by highlighting infrastructure development undertaken during its two-and-a-half-year government tenure.
Municipal Administration Minister Dr Ponguru Narayana, Nellore Rural MLA Kotamreddy Sridhar Reddy, MP Vemireddy Prabhakara Reddy, and TDP district chief Beeda Ravichandra Yadav are holding strategic meetings to coordinate campaign operations.
Conversely, the opposition YSRCP is targeting the government over alleged anti-people decisions and civic fund irregularities. YSRCP district chief Kakani Govardhan Reddy and MLC Parvatha Reddy Chandrasekhar Reddy are leading the party’s ward-level offensive. Political observers indicate that high-decibel campaigning will further escalate once the official nomination withdrawal phase concludes, setting up a fierce, prestige-driven municipal battle in Nellore city.
