New Delhi: The political battle over alleged financial irregularities in the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) intensified on Tuesday, with the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) accusing the BJP-led civic body of causing a ₹500 crore loss through the award of a toll (ECC) collection tender.

AAP senior leader and Leader of the Opposition in the MCD, Ankush Narang, alleged that the tender process was manipulated to restrict competition and favour select private companies. He claimed that while seven companies had initially submitted bids, changes in the eligibility criteria effectively reduced the competition to just two firms, resulting in significant financial losses to the MCD.

Calling it a ₹500 crore scam, Narang alleged that the BJP-controlled civic body had compromised public interest by awarding the contract in a manner that would deprive the corporation of substantial revenue. "The people of Delhi will ultimately bear the burden of this loss," he said.

Narang demanded that MCD Commissioner Ashwani Kumar explain why the tender conditions were altered and whether the changes were made under directions from the BJP leadership. He said he had written to the Commissioner seeking a detailed investigation, action against those responsible, and measures to ensure transparency in future tenders.

The AAP leader also referred to legal proceedings over the contract, stating that Skylark Limited has challenged the tender process in court after alleging irregularities and undue preference to two companies. According to Narang, the company had earlier raised the issue with Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, but no corrective action was taken.

He further accused the BJP of reviving corrupt practices in the MCD after regaining control of the civic body and criticised Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, MCD Mayor Pravesh Wahi, and Standing Committee Chairperson Satya Sharma for failing to prevent what he described as a major financial irregularity.

Reiterating that the issue concerns taxpayers' money, Narang called for an impartial inquiry, cancellation of the contract if wrongdoing is established, and complete transparency in future procurement processes.
