DTC strike enters Day 3, commuters worst hit
New Delhi: The Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) buses remained off the roads on Thursday, as drivers’ strike over daily-wage hikes, medical facilities and overtime payment entered its third day.
Commuters said on social media platforms that fewer buses were available on roads, leaving them stranded at bus stops for hours. Delhi Airport advised travellers to plan their journey accordingly as connectivity to the airport was affected due to the strike.
“Due to the ongoing DTC bus strike, bus connectivity to and from Delhi Airport may be impacted. Inter-terminal transfers are expected to remain operational through alternate arrangements,” Delhi Airport said in a post on X.
Drivers at Rani Khera, Rajghat, Nehru Place, Burari, Wazirpur, Ghumanhera, Sarita Vihar and several other bus depots were on strike for the third day.
“The government should work out a solution so that we are not faced with problems in dealing with private vendors. Our peaceful strike will continue as the transport department officials said talks are ongoing,” said Sonu Beniwal, one of the protesting drivers.
According to the drivers and conductors, they are operating DTC buses for a wage of Rs 862, the minimum wage fixed by the Delhi government, which is typically intended for daily-wage labourers, factory workers, or employees in small companies.
A day earlier, Transport Minister Pankaj Singh had directed the private concessionaires managing the DTC electric buses to resolve the issues with drivers immediately and even appealed to them to withdraw the strike. Currently, there are around 6,500 DTC buses in the city with a total ridership of around 60 lakh per day.
