Jaipur: The victory of Chauthmal Suman, who won the Sangod Municipality election as an independent candidate in Rajasthan, is a story of perseverance, resilience and sustained grassroots engagement.
After losing two elections himself and seeing his wife defeated when the seat was reserved for women, Suman refused to give up.
Despite successive setbacks, he remained active among local residents and continued his association with the community.
This year, contesting as an independent candidate from Ward 23 of Sangod Municipality, he finally secured a long-awaited victory.
The 2019 election was perhaps the most difficult phase of Chauthmal’s political journey. He did not have enough money even to file his nomination.
He went around the area with a pushcart, seeking donations from people to raise the required funds, and eventually filed his nomination.
He contested the election but was defeated.
Even after the setback, however, he continued his political activities and maintained contact with residents. Chauthmal earns a living by installing tap connections and repairing water-supply lines.
When this work is unavailable, he takes up manual labour to support his family.
In the recently held municipal elections, Chauthmal entered the electoral contest for the fourth time. Chauthmal’s struggle was particularly visible during the 2019 elections when he went around with a pushcart, lacking even the basic money needed to file his nomination.
After collecting the required funds, he filed his nomination and contested the election, but was defeated. The loss did not end his political activities.
He continued to remain in contact with residents and stayed active in the community.
The recently held municipal elections marked Chauthmal’s fourth attempt at winning an election.
After three previous defeats, he once again entered the contest as an independent.
After his victory, Chauthmal said the result showed that persistent effort and patience can eventually overcome repeated setbacks.
