SC judge slams police assault on students at Jantar Mantar

New Delhi: Justice Ujjal Bhuyan of the Supreme Court has criticised the alleged use of force against student protesters at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar, saying it was “very, very distressing” to see young police officers personally assaulting demonstrators.

Speaking at the launch of retired IPS officer Yashovardhan Azad’s book Policing the Republic in New Delhi late on Friday, Bhuyan said the professional distance expected of police personnel while dealing with crowds appeared to be weakening.

“All of us are dismayed when we see young officers of the Indian Police Service personally going and assaulting protesters and demonstrators. This is something very, very distressing to observe,” he said.

“The detachment expected of police officers somehow seems to be disappearing, and this is indeed a matter of grave concern,” the judge added.
