Buddhist Sthupa to be made tourist destination

Ongole: Prakasam district collector P Raja Babu visited the Buddhist Sthupa at Chandavaram on Tuesday along with state cultural affairs director Mallikarjuna and TDP Darsi constituency in-charge Gottipati Lakshmi to study its development as a tourist destination.
Speaking at the occasion, Raja Babu said that the Sthupa is the second most important Buddhist Sthupa in the country and is located in Prakasam district. He informed that steps would be taken to protect its historical importance and pass it on to future generations. He assured that the Sthupa would be developed fully as a tourist spot to attract international visitors. He further informed that a consultant agency has already been brought in to prepare a Detailed Project Report for its development.
Mallikarjuna observed that the Sthupa flourished between the second century BC and the second century AD. He informed that among the 150 Sthupas found in Andhra Pradesh, this is the largest. He said its location on the main road between Kasi and Kanchipuram, along with the nearby Gundlakamma River, gave it great historical importance. He added that the nearby Tripurantakam temple would also be developed along with this Sthupa as a single tourist circuit.
