Tirupati: A late-night altercation at a bar and restaurant on Residency Road in Bengaluru has landed Vikas Marmat, a 2019-batch Andhra Pradesh cadre IAS officer, and three others in a police case, after they allegedly abused and confronted police personnel who were checking the identities and ages of customers.

The Cubbon Park police registered an FIR against Marmat, Project Director, Kuppam Area Development Authority (KADA), and Abhay Uday Singh, Nitish and Roshan following the incident during a city-wide inspection of pubs, bars and restaurants on the intervening night of October 9 and 10.

According to the complaint lodged by Police Inspector Arun Salunke, the inspection was carried out on the directions of the Bengaluru City Police Commissioner to identify underage persons and check suspicious individuals at establishments within the Cubbon Park and Ashok Nagar police station limits. Salunke, along with police personnel including BS Ashoka and Balaram Nayak, reached Cavore Bar and Restaurant on Residency Road around midnight to verify the identity cards of customers and establish their ages. During the inspection, four individuals allegedly picked an argument with the police team over trivial issues and verbally abused the inspector and other personnel on duty. The confrontation was recorded, and videos purportedly showing the incident circulated widely on social media on Tuesday, bringing the episode into public view. Based on Salunke's complaint, the Cubbon Park police booked the four under various provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), including Section 115(2) for voluntarily causing hurt, Section 351(2) for criminal intimidation, Section 352 for intentional insult with intent to provoke a breach of peace, Section 132 for assault or criminal force against a public servant to deter the discharge of duty, and Section 133 for assault or criminal force with intent to dishonour a person. Marmat has been named as the prime accused, while the other three have been listed as co-accused in the case. Further details of the investigation are awaited.
