SVIMS performs complex spinal surgery on young patient under Pranadanam scheme

Tirupati: Sri Venkateswara Institute of Medical Sciences (SVIMS) has successfully performed a complex corrective spinal surgery on a 25-year-old man suffering from Idiopathic Dorsal Scoliosis under TTD’s Sri Venkateswara Pranadana Trust.M Tirumaleswara Reddy, a resident of Madhava Palle in Prakasam district, was admitted to Department of Neurosurgery at SVIMS on August 22, 2026. Following detailed clinical evaluation and investigations, doctors advised surgical correction. He underwent the complex spinal procedure successfully on September 9.

The patient recovered satisfactorily after surgery and was discharged following postoperative care and rehabilitation advice. At the time of discharge, he expressed gratitude to TTD and SVIMS for providing financial assistance of about Rs 5 lakh and medical support for his treatment. Idiopathic Dorsal Scoliosis is a condition in which spine develops an abnormal sideways curvature in thoracic region without an identifiable underlying cause. It is commonly detected during childhood and adolescence. Early diagnosis can help in timely treatment and prevent further progression of the deformity.

The surgery was performed by SVIMS Neurosurgery team comprising department head Dr VV Ramesh Chandra, Prof BCM Prasad, Dr V Prasanna Kumar, Dr M Mahesh and Dr M Bhanu Prakash Reddy.

SVIMS Director-cum-Vice Chancellor Dr Gudaru Jagadish said the institution was committed to providing advanced treatment to poor and needy patients. The Department of Neurosurgery had performed 5,194 surgeries free of cost under TTD Pranadana Scheme between 2001 and 2026. Another 162 high-end procedures were performed under the High-End Therapy Scheme between 2023 and 2026, taking the total to 5,356 surgeries. The department has also performed more than 200 surgeries for Idiopathic Dorsal Scoliosis and related spinal deformities.
