Vijayawada: The Vijayawada Municipal Corporation (VMC) has received a major boost for strengthening its urban infrastructure, with projects worth around Rs 900 crore sanctioned under Phase-II of the Urban Challenge Fund (UCF). The projects are aimed at improving the drainage network, preventing urban flooding and strengthening water supply infrastructure in the extended areas of the city. The VMC and Municipal Administration and Urban Development (MA&UD) Department have proposed two major projects under the UCF Phase-II. Of the total Rs 900 crore, Rs 600 crore has been earmarked for storm water drainage and sponge infrastructure in the core city area to address urban flooding, while Rs 300 crore has been allocated for strengthening water supply in the extended areas, including saturation of supply and installation of Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) arrangements.
The State government issued GO Rt No 1142 approving the Phase-II projects under the UCF. The Andhra Pradesh Urban Finance and Infrastructure Development Corporation (APUFIDC) has been designated as the nodal agency for implementing the UCF in the State, with projects worth around Rs 5,912 crore being taken up across urban local bodies.
The Urban Challenge Fund is a Centrally Sponsored Scheme of the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs. Under the scheme, Central assistance is limited to 25% of the cost of bankable projects, subject to the condition that at least 50% of the project cost is funded through bonds, bank loans and public-private partnerships. The remaining amount is to be borne by the State government, urban local bodies or raised from the market.
Meanwhile, Tadigadapa Municipality in Krishna district has also been selected under the UCF Phase-II. It has been allocated Rs 150 crore for a water supply gap infrastructure project, aimed at strengthening the existing water supply system and meeting the needs of the municipality.
