RTC unions demand cancellation of private tenders for electric buses
Vijayawada: Conveners of the APSRTC Joint Action Committee (JAC) expressed concern that private tenders for electric buses could threaten the survival of the Andhra Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation (APSRTC) and jeopardise the job security of its employees. They urged the state government to immediately cancel the private tenders issued for the procurement and operation of 1,450 electric buses.
Addressing a press conference here on Monday, JAC conveners Y Srinivasa Rao and Palisetti Damodara Rao announced that APSRTC employees would stage peaceful protests by wearing black badges on October 22 and 23 to highlight their concerns over the corporation’s future. The leaders said a roadmap for future agitation programmes would be announced in Vijayawada on October 26. They urged the government not to hand over RTC depots and related infrastructure to private operators, warning that such a move could weaken the state-run transport undertaking. Clarifying their stand, the conveners said they were not opposed to the introduction of electric buses. However, they insisted that APSRTC should purchase and operate the buses itself using its own workforce rather than involving private agencies.
They also appealed to the government not to transfer RTC assets to private entities and demanded the immediate filling of 15,000 vacant posts in the corporation. The JAC further requested the reopening of four RTC depots that were shut down in the state.
The conveners said employees across all RTC depots and units would report to duty wearing black badges and participate in peaceful demonstrations on October 22 and 23 as part of the statewide protest programme.
