Vijayawada: Participating in sports can help lawyers cope with physical and mental stress and maintain good health, said Sports Authority of Andhra Pradesh (SAAP) Vice-Chairman & Managing Director (VC & MD) S Bharani.

She inaugurated the two-day NRI Cup State-level Advocates Shuttle Tournament, organised by Bezawada Bar Association (BBA), at Chennupati Ramakotaiah Municipal Corporation Indoor Stadium in Vijayawada, on Saturday.More than 300 advocates are participating in the tournament in singles, doubles, mixed doubles and 50-plus doubles categories. She interacted with organisers and was introduced to the participating players.

Speaking on the occasion, Bharani said she would make efforts to organise more sporting activities through the government for lawyers and employees from different professions. Such programmes would contribute to the goal of a healthy Andhra Pradesh, she said.

She observed that sports played an important role in reducing mental stress and improving overall well-being. Bharani appreciated the enthusiasm shown by lawyers, particularly younger participants, and said their competitive spirit reflected their interest in sports.

Forest Department officer Narendran GG, another chief guest, congratulated the organisers and participants for conducting the tournament with a large number of advocates taking part. Bar Council member and tournament chairman Chalasani Ajay Kumar said the response from advocates was encouraging.

He said the organisers would strive to conduct more sports and cultural programmes with the support of the legal fraternity to help reduce stress among lawyers. In women’s singles, 34 players competed, with BBA advocate S Latha and Lekha Tejaswi of Bhimavaram advancing to the final.

In men’s singles, 105 matches were played on Saturday. Semi-finals and finals of singles events, besides doubles, mixed doubles and 50-plus doubles competitions, will be held on Sunday.
