Visakhapatnam: Visakhapatnam Member of Parliament M Sribharat and district collector M Abhishikth Kishore called upon people, public representatives and officials to work collectively to make Visakhapatnam the best city in the country and achieve world-class cleanliness standards.

Speaking at the district-level award ceremony of the Swachh Andhra Awards organised at the VMRDA Children’s Arena on Friday to commemorate Gandhi Jayanti, they said it was a great pleasure to honour the individuals and organisations who worked hard to maintain cleanliness in the city.

District collector said that Visakhapatnam has modern sanitation systems, mechanised sanitation, waste-to-energy plants, and modern equipment for removing waste in the sea. However, he opined that world-class cleanliness is not possible with the efforts of sanitation workers alone; achieving it requires collective participation. The collector said that even if sanitation workers work 24 hours a day and more waste to energy plants are set up, the desired result will not be achieved without a change in public behaviour.

The collector stated that he wanted to work with the aim of taking Visakhapatnam to Japanese-level cleanliness standards in the next two to three years.

Visakhapatnam is already one of the best cities in the country and if it is to become a global city in the coming days, it is necessary to achieve world-class standards in cleanliness as well, the Collector emphasised.

Government Whip and MLC Vepada Chiranjeevi Rao said that it is very important to bring about a change in the attitude of the people along with the efforts of government employees and sanitation workers. He said that in developed countries, people are ashamed to throw garbage in open places, and Visakhapatnam needs the same level of behavioural change. Visakhapatnam East MLA Velagapudi Ramakrishna Babu said that there are only a limited number of sanitation workers for a population of about 20 lakhs. He urged every citizen to do their part and not leave the responsibility of city cleanliness to sanitation workers alone. At the district-level Swachh Andhra Awards ceremony, 68 individuals and organisations were awarded in various

categories.
