Visakhapatnam: The Transport Department has intensified its crackdown on violations by contract carriage (CC) buses in Visakhapatnam district, registering 96 cases and imposing fines of Rs 8.76 lakh.
During a special inspection drive, RTA officials detected several violations, including buses operating without valid permits, violating permit conditions and failing to pay motor vehicle taxes. Officials also identified safety lapses, including non-functional emergency exit doors, and registered cases against the violators.
Apart from enforcing the provisions of the Motor Vehicles Act, the department focused on monitoring road safety standards to ensure passenger safety during travel to hometowns for the Dussehra festival.
Deputy Transport Commissioner (in-charge) R.C.H. Srinivas stated that special inspections of private buses would continue until the end of this month to prevent violations and safeguard passengers during the festive season.
He cautioned bus owners and operators to strictly comply with all regulations concerning permits, motor vehicle taxes, vehicle fitness and road safety standards. Emphasising that passenger safety remains the top priority, the DTC (in-charge) warned operators against compromising mandatory safety standards and collecting exorbitant fares.
