Wardhannapet MLA and retired IPS officer KR Nagaraju
WARANGAL: Wardhannapet MLA and retired IPS officer KR Nagaraju on Sunday demanded the immediate resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, saying the Election Commission was responsible for clearing the growing doubts among people over its functioning.
Addressing an all-party meeting held at Pochamma Maidan under the chairmanship of district Congress president Mohammed Ayub, Nagaraju said elections were the foundation of democracy and that governments elected by the people through their votes were the true representatives of democracy.
Transparency vital
Nagaraju said every Indian’s right to vote was a constitutional right and demanded complete transparency in electoral rolls, voting rights and the conduct of elections. He said it was unfortunate that doubts were being raised over the electoral system itself.
He demanded that the Election Commission provide equal opportunities to all political parties and responsibly address any doubts or misconceptions relating to voting rights. Protecting the people’s right to vote was the Commission’s foremost responsibility, he said.
Rally on October 7
As part of efforts to protect democracy, an all-party rally will be taken out from Pochamma Maidan to the Ambedkar statue in Hanamkonda on October 7, Nagaraju announced. He appealed to the public and democratic forces to participate in large numbers.
He said the Congress party would not remain a silent spectator to any attempt to weaken democracy. Awareness programmes and protests would be organised across the State under the Congress leadership to protect people’s voting rights, constitutional values and the democratic system, he added.
