Canadian poet wins Nobel in literature

Stockholm: Canadian poet, essayist and translator Anne Carson won the Nobel Prize in literature Thursday for playful, genre-blending works that fuse the classical and the modern. The Toronto-born Carson, 76, draws on themes and stories from ancient Greek and Roman literature for writing that often blends elements of poetry, essay and fiction. The permanent secretary of the Swedish Academy said the author was in Iceland "listening to the wind" when the academy reached her to notify her of the win. "She was very taken by surprise," Ingrid Carlberg said.
Carson is among the more high-profile recent winners of the literature Nobel, which often honours authors little known outside of the literary world and is sometimes criticised for valuing literary experimentation over the ability to connect with a broad readership.
