India on Tuesday expressed condemnation of an attack on the Panama-registered commercial ship MT On Peace off the coast of Oman as it sailed through the Strait of Hormuz.
The incident resulted in 12 injuries, including 11 Indian nationals, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said. There were 19 people on board, including 17 Indians.
Assistance was provided by the Omani authorities who evacuated the injured crew with them being brought to Khasab, Oman for medical treatment.
India condemns attacks on commercial vessels
India was concerned with the ongoing attacks on commercial shipping vessels and seafarers in the region, Randhir Jaiswal, MEA's spokesperson, said.
The ministry urged a "prompt discontinuation" of such incidences, emphasizing the need for peace and stability and safety on international sea lanes.
India also expressed its appreciation to the Omani authorities for helping to evacuate and treat the injured crew members.
Attacks against commercial vessels and civilian infrastructure and seafarers must cease and safe navigation and international commerce through the key waterways restore as soon as possible, the MEA said.
MT On Peace Struck While Crossing Strait Of Hormuz
The projectile was transiting the MT On Peace through the Strait of Hormuz at IMO number 9893204.
It took place off the coast of Oman, one of the world's most vital shipping lanes. The Strait of Hormuz is an important shipping route for international trade and a key passage for oil trade.
Details of the projectiles strike, such as who fired them, are being investigated. There is no indication on the current reports of where the shot came from, or who fired it.
11 Indian Crew Members Among Those Injured
The 19 on board the ship included 17 Indians. According to the MEA, 12 crew members were injured in the incident of which 11 were Indians.
Oman's authorities helped transport the injured sailors to Khasab where they are receiving medical care.
The development has given rise to fresh worries on the safety of the Indian seafarers working on commercial ships in the region in New Delhi.
India urges an end to attacks on shipping
The incident follows ongoing security worries with commercial shipping traffic in and around the Strait of Hormuz.
The MEA emphasized that repeated attacks on vessels in the area was a serious concern, and that they be immediately stopped.
The protection of commercial shipping and seafarers is also important to ensure international waterways remain operational and trade continues worldwide, New Delhi added.
The ministry repeated its request to re-establish safe navigation and unhindered trade through the international sea lanes.
