Delhi Building Collapse: 2 Dead, 40-50 Feared Trapped In Satya Niketan PG

Death toll rises to two on Sunday afternoon after a multi-storey building housing a paying guest for boys in Satya Niketan, in South-West Delhi collapsed.

Preliminary information cited by police indicates that approx. 40-50 students are trapped under the rubble. Several agencies are still working on the scene.

Efforts were underway to find people still trapped at the site, and Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta visited the site.

The rescuers have already rescued about 6-7 students and so far. These were referred to local hospitals for treatment.

Two of the students who were rescued were in critical condition at the AIIMS Trauma Centre, it said.

Emergency personnel of Delhi Disaster Management Authority (DDMA), National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), Delhi Fire Services, Delhi Police, Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD), Civil Defence and other agencies have been deployed.

The rescue is being carried out as soon as possible. The fast rescue operation was declared by Chief Minister Rekha Gupta.

A PCR call informing about collapse of the building was received at South Campus Police Station at about 1.34pm, Delhi Police said.

Preliminary information suggests the collapse of the building may have occurred at school when it was occupied by about 40-50 students, a police official at the scene said.

Authorities will be able to find out the exact number of occupants by looking at the PG's registration records.

Local residents say the fallen building was a boys' "PG". News agency ANI quoted an eyewitness as saying that the five-storey structure was “Hostel Daze”.

The witness further reported that another building had collapsed, and that pupils in their rooms were trapped under the rubble.

At least a dozen students were reportedly injured, and rescuers were hampered in reaching the ones buried under the rubble.

Students from the surrounding area stated that at the time of the collapse, many residents of the area were probably inside the PG.

Rescue forces continue to work on the scene using various equipment to extricate the debris and look for any survivors. It's still not known how many people were trapped and what caused the collapse of the structure.
