Justice Sanjay K. Agrawal sworn in as 44th Chief Justice of Rajasthan HC

Jaipur: Justice Sanjay K. Agrawal, formerly a judge of the Chhattisgarh High Court, was sworn in as the 44th Chief Justice of the Rajasthan High Court at a ceremony held at Raj Bhavan here on Monday. Rajasthan Governor Haribhau Bagde administered the oath of office in the presence of senior judicial officers, government representatives and top administrative officials.

Following the oath-taking ceremony, Justice Agrawal signed the warrant of appointment issued by the Rashtrapati Bhavan, formally completing the process of assuming charge as the new Chief Justice of the Rajasthan High Court.

Chief Minister Bhajan Lal Sharma, Deputy Chief Ministers Diya Kumari and Premchand Bairwa, several state ministers and all judges of the Rajasthan High Court attended the ceremony.

Rajasthan Chief Secretary V. Srinivas was also present. The ceremony also saw the presence of outgoing Acting Chief Justice Sanjeev Prakash Sharma, whose tenure had been the subject of controversy in recent months.

The appointment of Justice Agrawal comes at a significant time for the Rajasthan High Court, following developments surrounding the office of the Acting Chief Justice.

With his formal assumption of office, Justice Agrawal will now oversee the judicial and administrative functioning of the Rajasthan High Court. As Chief Justice, he will have a key role in the allocation of judicial responsibilities, administrative supervision and ensuring the smooth functioning of the court.

The swearing-in ceremony brought together the state's top political, judicial and administrative leadership, underlining the importance of the change at the helm of the High Court.

Justice Agrawal's appointment is expected to usher in a new phase for the Rajasthan High Court, with the new Chief Justice taking charge of the institution's judicial administration and day-to-day functioning.

The formal ceremony at Raj Bhavan marked the beginning of Justice Agrawal's tenure as the 44th Chief Justice of the Rajasthan High Court. His appointment assumes added significance as the court moves forward following the recent controversy involving its previous acting leadership.

Supreme Court Justice Sandeep Mehta had recently written to the Chief Justice of India (CJI) Surya Kant seeking Justice Sharma's transfer out of Rajasthan and appointment of a regular Chief Justice from another High Court.

Justice Mehta had raised allegations concerning Justice Sharma's exercise of administrative powers and the listing of cases. The controversy also triggered protests by lawyers at both the Jaipur and Jodhpur benches of the Rajasthan High Court, with lawyers demanding that Justice Sharma be divested of his charge as Acting Chief Justice.

Justice Sharma, who is set to retire later this month, has denied the allegations against him.
