Vice-President Radhakrishnan visits INA museum, war memorial in Manipur

Imphal/Itanagar: Vice-President C.P. Radhakrishnan on Tuesday visited the Indian National Army (INA) Museum and War Memorial at Moirang in Manipur’s Bishnupur district.

The museum, which houses a collection of letters, photographs, badges of ranks and other war memorabilia, reminds visitors of the great sacrifices made by the INA soldiers under the charismatic leadership of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose.

Moirang, located around 45 km south of state capital Imphal, holds a special place in the history of India’s freedom struggle.

It was at Moirang that the INA flag was first unfurled on April 14, 1944, marking an important chapter in the history of India’s struggle for Independence.

The Vice-President was accompanied by Manipur Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla and Home Minister Konthoujam Govindas Singh, Director General of Police (DGP) Mukesh Singh during his visit to the INA Museum and War Memorial.

Vice-President Radhakrishnan arrived in Imphal from Assam on Tuesday for a one-day visit to Manipur as part of his tour of the four Northeastern states – Assam, Meghalaya, Manipur and Arunachal Pradesh.

Earlier, the Vice-President was received at the Bir Tikendrajit International Airport in Imphal by the Governor, Chief Minister and Director General of Police (DGP), Manipur, along with other dignitaries.

He was also accorded a guard of honour upon his arrival at the airport. The Vice-President, who arrived in Manipur from Guwahati, will leave the state later for Donyi Polo Airport in Arunachal Pradesh’s Itanagar, officials said.

Massive security arrangements have been put in place in Imphal and Bishnupur district in view of the Vice-President’s visit.

Vice-President Radhakrishnan’s two-day itinerary in Arunachal Pradesh includes visits to Nyedar Namlo (Prayer Hall), the Jawaharlal Nehru State Museum in Itanagar and the Donyi Polo Mission School for the Hearing and Visually Impaired in Itanagar.

On Wednesday, the Vice-President will attend a special session of the Arunachal Pradesh Legislative Assembly and visit the Assembly Gallery-cum-Museum.

An official said that Vice-President Radhakrishnan is also likely to interact with Chief Minister Pema Khandu and senior government officials during his stay in the state. Security arrangements have been further tightened in view of the Vice-President’s two-day visit to the Northeastern state.
