Baragada: A proposal to issue a commemorative postage stamp in honour of legendary freedom fighter and social worker Parbati Giri, popularly known as ‘Badama’, on the occasion of her birth centenary has received a positive response from the Centre.
Baragada MP Pradip Purohit had raised the matter in the Lok Sabha under Rule 377 on July 24, 2026, seeking national recognition for the remarkable contributions of Parbati Giri, whose birth centenary is being observed in 2026.
Born on January 19, 1926, Parbati Giri was inspired by the ideals of Mahatma Gandhi and joined the freedom movement at the age of just 16. She actively participated in the struggle against British rule and endured imprisonment for her involvement in the freedom movement.
Even after Independence, she devoted her life to social service, women’s empowerment, education, healthcare and the welfare of underprivileged children. Her selfless service earned her widespread recognition as ‘Badama’ among the people of Odisha.
