Chittoor: Inspired by proverb service to man is service to God, social worker P Padmanabha Naidu had established Ammavodi Sevashram in the city in the year 2004, to provide permanent shelter for the orphans. It has been providing services with commitment to destitute, beggars and elderly persons at their orphanage.

The orphanage had performed funeral rites of 140 persons, who have died while taking shelter here in the last ten years. It has been admitting elderly and neglected persons in their orphanage by collecting information through mainstream media and from people, who are passing on details about them. At present, there are 72 persons including elderly persons, destitute and mentally challenged in the shelter home.

Speaking to The Hans India, Padmanabha Naidu said on Friday that it has become a herculean task for him to accommodate more people in the limited space available in the orphanage. “We provide food, medicines, clothes and beds at free of cost for orphans. Our volunteers attend all their personal hygienic needs,” he added.

After coming to know about Ammavodi services to the orphans, Naidu said several charitable trusts, voluntary organisations, government officials, politicians and donors have been contributing funds, furniture, essential commodities, clothes and medicines to the orphanage. He said that Endowment Minister Manikyala Rao had recently visited their orphanage and assured them of providing required support from the State government. Naidu’s family members are extending complete support to run the orphanage by quitting their professional careers. He stated that he wants to build a housing complex to accommodate more beggars, destitute and elderly persons if the State government is willing to allocate six acres of land in and around the city.

The orphanage founder said that a donor had provided a house for Ammavodi. “35 beds were provided at orphanage after renovating them at a cost of Rs 6 lakh,” he added. Naidu said that they have involved inmates of orphanage in making of Agarbathies to inculcate self-confidence among them.
