Hyderabad: The public representatives and civil society groups demanded that the steel plant should be set up in Kadapa at all costs. They said that this was their right, which was guaranteed under AP State Reorganisation Act.

Expressing their opinion during the Dasa Disa programme organised by HMTV in Kadapa, politicians, representatives of NGOs and students felt that the district, which was underdeveloped would become self sustained, if the steel factory comes up.

The Centre under no circumstance should delay the fulfillment of its assurance. The argument that it was examining the feasibility was not acceptable to the people of Kadapa, they said in unison.

Kadapa district has natural resources and could be transformed into another Manchester, if the steel plant comes up, they felt.

Steel Plant Sadhana Samithi convenor G V Praveen said that the steel plant would create direct employment to at least 12,000 people.

He dared the leaders present on the occasion to take up fast unto death for the cause, if they were serious in getting the steel plant.

Representative of Jana Vignana Vedika, Karunakar Reddy felt that there was no question of feasibility study, as it was already promised under AP Reorganisation Act. There was a need for ‘political feasibility’, as there was no dearth of resources, he added.

YSRCP leaders including MLA Srikanth Reddy and former MP M V Mysoora Reddy said that both State and Central governments should take up the issue and ensure that the steel plant becomes a reality.

“If capital city works can be taken up at Amravarti without any feasibility study, why cannot a plant come up without any fresh feasibility study, when large amount of iron ore was available,” they questioned.

Mysoora Reddy said that the Obulapuram mining was a closed chapter and the Central government should involve SAIL (Steel Authority of India), as BJP holds responsibility for implementing promises made in the Reorganisation Act.

Congress leader N Tulasi Reddy recalled that TDP after coming to power promised to develop steel plant in its ‘vision’ document, while proposing de-centralisation of the State.

TDP leader Satish Reddy blamed the Congres government in undivided AP for the abandoning the construction of plant after spending thousands of crores.

He said that the TDP government was committed to make the steel plant a reality. Among other issues that came up for discussion were de-centralisation of development.

The programme was moderated by P Venkatakrishna Chief Editor (Debates and Discussions).
