Atheists may censure the use of censers in their households but they cannot influence censorship laws and cannot act as censors unless they are vested with powers within and outside their homes. Censer is a container which holds incense sticks that are lit in churches, temples and at the altars in the households. The censers used at temples and homes may differ in size and shape.

Censor is an institution or an organization authorized to examine text, letters, books, publications, movies, plays before they are either published or broadcast and remove content that is objectionable according to the law, or content which is obscene, libelous, offending, politically unacceptable to the audience or to the government. The Censor Board of India has to certify movies before they are released in the cinema halls.

The editor of a newspaper has to ensure that the content of the newspaper is not libelous or prone to be taken to the court, so he also acts as the censor. In Ancient Rome, censor is the person who maintained a register of all citizens and supervised the public morals (the morals the Roman times may vary when compared to the Digital times).

Censor also functions as verb: examining and removing parts from a publication or a movie. The government can censor some publications at the time of war or during an emergency in the country. Censorship is the policy of a government or an act of it to censor some contents of publications or broadcasts before they reach the audience or the public. The rules for censorship vary from country to country.

In democratic countries such as India, US, UK the censorship laws aren’t strong and stringent but this is not the case in dictatorial and communist regimes such as China, Cuba, North Korea and other countries. Censorious is an adjective: Censorious means finding faults in other people; severely critical about someone or something. The movie makers plan their movies carefully bearing in mind the censorious nature of critics.

Censure means to criticize severely, harshly about someone or something, rebuke somebody formally. Censure functions as a verb and a noun. The speaker of the legislature such as an Assembly or the Lok Sabha can censure MPs when they utter or behave badly or against the norms of the conduct in the elected house. When an elected government censures something it attracts criticism. Censure is normally unaccepted by liberals.
