Hanamkonda: The district administration is making serious efforts to make Warangal Urban district free from gudumba brewing, selling and consumption.

With the help of large scale awareness campaign launched in undivided Warangal district, nearly 90 per cent result has been achieved in controlling the menace of gudumba.

The State government has allocated Rs 5 crores to the district to offer loans to rehabilitate families producing the illicit liquor.

A meeting of coordination committee on gudumba prevention was held here on Tuesday.
The District Collector, Amrapali Kata, along with Warangal Commissioner of Police G Sudheer Babu reviewed the measures required to completely eliminate gudumba production and controlling belt shops in the district.

Speaking on the occasion, the Collector said financial assistance of Rs 60 lakhs has already been given to 108 families involved in brewing and selling gudumba to take up alternate livelihood activities. Proposals should be submitted to make another 500 families give up the illicit liquor production.

She wanted the officials to conduct regular inspections in villages and counselling sessions to those brewing and selling gudumba.

A report on the family conditions of the persons concerned should be prepared, she told the officials of revenue, excise, police and mandal development committees.

Cases should be booked against those selling and transporting black jaggery, Amrapali added.

Commissioner of Police Sudheer Babu said with the coordinated efforts, gudumba brewing and sale was controlled to a larger extent, yet in some villages and slums in Warangal city the illicit liquor was still being produced and sold.

There has been a fall in the cases related to illicit liquor this year. Continuous raids and patrolling during night hours should be conducted on troublesome locations.

The coordination committee meetings should be held once in every 15 days at mandal level to tackle the issue, the Commissioner suggested. Focus should also be made on eliminating belt shops, he added.

Joint Collector S Dayanand, DFO B Bheema Naik, RDO K Venkatamadhava Rao, Excise Superintendent Rajyalakshmi, mandal development officers, tahsildars, excise and police officials were present.
