The Frozen Semen Bull Station (FSBS), the only bull semen collection centre in Telangana won the national award recently for the best semen producing centre in the country on National Dairy Day.
Karimnagar: The Frozen Semen Bull Station (FSBS), the only bull semen collection centre in Telangana won the national award recently for the best semen producing centre in the country on National Dairy Day.
This was possibly only due to the dint of hard work of officials and staff members of the station. Post State bifurcation, two of three such stations went to Andhra Pradesh and the FSBS in Karimnagar remained in Telangana State.
The TDP government has set up in Karimnagar in 1985 to produce hybrid variety of milking animals in order to increase milk production by artificial insemination. Initially, there were only 30 bulls, now it has 79 bulls including two German breeds.
In 2002, the station was brought under the Telangana State Livestock Development Agency (TSLDA) jurisdiction from the Animal Husbandry Department.
The station, whose style of working is on the par with cooperative societies, improved its rating from that of Grade-C to that of Grade-B. On account of special measures initiated it conformed to the standards of the national dairy plan-2013 Grade-A.
With the formation of Telangana State, over a period of time its quality standards have been improved as also the production of semen enabling it to win the national award in November last year.
There are 79 breeds of bulls in the station to produce semen from them. Annually, 15 lakh doses of semen are being collected against the targeted 25 lakh doses. To reach the target, the station should have 120 bulls.
Each dose of semen is sold at Rs 40. The station caters to the artificial insemination needs of not only various districts in the State but also other states. The station has bulls of various breeds like Murra, Jersey, Gir, Shahniwal and so on.
The station procures male calves from cattle with high milk content. They will be fed with nutritious feed. Once they become two-years-old, semen is collected from them. The bulls are vaccinated from time to time and also all cattle within the radius of 20 km are also vaccinated to prevent them from seasonal and viral diseases.
The semen collected from the healthy bulls is preserved in temperatures ranging between -10 degrees and -196 degrees Celsius. The frozen semen will be sent to Visakhapatnam to test the quality. A central team visited 53 such stations and found that the quality of the semen produced at the Karimnagar station was the best and gave it Grade-A.
The farmers have been appealing to authorities to increase the number of bulls and set up similar stations across Telangana to augment milk production.
Laboratory in-charge at the station Suresh said that they were able to deliver good results because of adherence to the quality standards set by the Center for semen production. He linked meeting the target to increasing the number of bulls at the station.
Station Deputy Director Rajanna said that activities of the station were not popular among the people. People realised about the existence of the organisation only after it received the national award recently.
He attributed the success to team work of the station staff members. He said that the station would be able to deliver better results provided if it is provided more amenities.
